Mathematics helps children make sense of the words around them and find logical
meaning in the physical world. Through mathematics, children learn to understand
their world in terms of numbers, shapes and patterns. They learn to reason,
connect ideas, and think logically with mathematical concepts. Mathematics is
more than rules and operations that we were taught in school. It is about
connecting to and understanding the relationship in every aspect of life.
The present education system has made a 360° shift from learning mathematics by obedience to learning by applied reasoning. This means children learn best when they are interested and even excited about what they are doing. Children are given many opportunities to see and hear different things, and to move about and play with things they can touch. This helps them to connect things, and demonstrate concepts in their own way. Children should be encouraged to think and to show respect for their thinking. But remember, it is not just the doing but the thinking that promotes learning. In view of this we have provided Math Labs at the school to make the study of Mathematics meaningful and interesting.
Maths Lab will enable school students to learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify mathematical facts and theorems using technology tools.
Maths Lab will offer Multiple Teaching and Learning Aids comprising of Technology Applications, Videos, Manipulative, Measuring Instruments, Tables and Charts, to schools based on the three pillars of ‘Imagination, Investigation and Interaction’.
Math Lab provides an opportunity to students to understand, internalize, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations, thus building interest and confidence in students learning the subject
Computer lab- The Computer lab is an open lab for students, faculty, & staff that promotes new modules of learning and collaborative activities. It is designed to provide students with a flexible space integrated with technologies that enhance and encourage. The computers are upgraded from time to time to ensure that the facilities and software remains updated.
Language lab- The Language Laboratory is an audio or audio-visual installation used as an aid in modern language teaching. It allows a teacher to listen to and manage student audio via a hard wired analogue tape deck based system with “sound booths “in fixed locations.
English Language Lab is there in GPS to maintain a good linguistic competence through accuracy in grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and more effective learning. It is a network based teaching .
library- The library in GVIS school contains more than 2000 books, covering almost all subjects. Students, teachers and even parents, all may access the Library to enhance their knowledge in every field. It is a very enriching experience to be here. Students visit the library on regular basis.
The Readers Club has been instituted to inculcate and encourage a healthy reading habit among the students .A free access is provided to a variety of books of their caliber and interest in the School Library
SPORTS- Physical – Education has a major role to play in the development of young students. It is an integral part of the total education of any child and is closely linked to other creative and learning experiences and skill acquisition. It makes a significant contribution to the all-round harmonious development of the mind and body. It also helps students to develop the competencies and beliefs necessary for incorporating regular physical activities into their lives. Through involvement in a well-taught physical-education program, students can achieve physical and personal benefits. We all know that regular physical activity provides numerous health benefits for learner bodies and lower blood pressure to improved mental health and cognitive functioning. Quality physical education means a planned program of instruction and activity for all students through the entire school year. It helps students:
• To develop personal physical fitness and hence bone growth.
• To learn variety of activities that will enhance life-long learning and participation.
• To exhibit more positive attitudes about school, physical activity and self.
• To have less aggressive behaviors.
• To display positive attitudes towards an active life style
• To achieve a health-enhancing life of physical activity.
• To understand and respect individual differences among people in physical setting.
To make physical education more meaningful at GPS it is offered with regularity. The importance of daily periods is recognized and achieved wherever possible. Specialized coaches have been deputed to train the students in Hockey, Football, Table tennis, Badminton, Kho-Kho, Cricket, Basketball etc.
SMART CLASS- Learning through Educomp Smart Class
Our school has incorporated the use of teaching and learning through Educomp Smart Class program from July 2009. One module has costed Rs. 1,10,000 to the school.
Smartclass is a digital initiative of Educomp, which is rapidly transforming the way teachers teach and students learn in schools with innovative and meaningful use of technology. Powered by the world's largest repository of digital content mapped to Indian School Curriculum, smartclass brings in technology right next to the blackboard for teachers in the classrooms. Students learn difficult and abstract curriculum concepts watching highly engaging visuals and animations. This makes learning an enjoyable experience for students while improving their overall academic performance in school.
Smartclass also enables teachers to instantly assess and evaluate the learning achieved by their students in class with an innovative assessment technology- smart assessment system - designed by Educomp.
Smartclass has a unique delivery model for schools. A knowledge center is created inside the school equipped with the entire library of smartclass digital content. The knowledge center is connected to the classrooms through Intranet. Teachers get the relevant digital resources such as animations and videos, interactive virtual labs tools etc. and use them as a part of their lesson plans in every classroom period. The classrooms are equipped with state of the art infrastructure complete with custom designed electronic interactive white boards, projection systems, PCs and UPS.
The modules are embedded in a template that allows the teachers to teach a chosen lesson in class. Frame by frame, with engaging and instructionally sound animated set of visuals while retaining complete control on the pace of delivery. The curriculum reach unfolds from Kindergarten to grade twelve covering subjects like Mathematics, Science, English, EVS, Social Studies, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, History, Geography, Economics and Business Studies.
LIFE SKILL- The teaching of values and life skills in India is sporadic and largely fact based as there is no single comprehensive values and life skills curriculum, either at national or state level. Thus, what children learn about moral values, health, physical and mental fitness, hygiene and life skills is episodic and subjected to the theoretical knowledge obtained through the teachers and parents. Further more, there are no such programs that take developmental and comprehe- nsive approach to values and life skills teaching as fun, at the primary grades.
Thus. for the most important learning years, Indian children are not equipped, either by their parents or by their schools, to deal with the contemporary health hazards and moral turmoil as well as to develop the ability to handle simple situations, that are typical of developing such as ours.
The Indian education system needs informed citizenry with the capacity to access, use and manage information in its own interest. Needless to say, more interactive teaching methods, with its emphasis on students participation in the learning process, will serve as a better model for preparing students for their better future.
